Custom software starts with the right team.
Tilted Windmill provides embedded product, design, engineering, and delivery talent for companies building custom software. We bring the experience your initiative needs, plug into the team and process you already have, and keep the work moving through the realities of enterprise delivery.
Most custom software projects fail in the same three places.
Custom software is rarely a coding problem. It is a team problem. Companies with the budget, the mandate, and a real initiative often run into the same three failure modes long before a line of production code is written:
The outsourced build that ships the spec and misses the outcome.
Offshore and contractor teams optimize for delivering what was written down. The business need shifts during the build, and the spec does not. The product launches and nobody owns whether it worked.
The contractor team that loses the context.
Turnover, time zones, and pass-the-baton handoffs strip out the institutional memory of why decisions were made. Six months in, no one remembers the original tradeoffs, and every change is a fight.
The project team that lacks product vision.
A team that takes orders cannot push back on a bad requirement. A team that bills per change cannot help you shape the work. You end up paying for execution while making every strategic call yourself.
We embed into your team. We do not run a parallel project.
That sentence is the whole company in one line. We do not replace your team. We do not disappear into a separate workstream and reappear with a deliverable. We embed experienced product, design, engineering, and delivery talent directly into your existing structure — working inside your tools, your cadence, and your processes.
That difference shows up in the work. Our people sit in your stand-ups. They learn the politics. They know who actually has to sign off on a procurement decision and how long it will take. They carry the context, instead of asking you to re-explain it every sprint.
This is how custom software actually gets shipped in companies that are not pure software companies: through the procurement layer, through the security review, through the internal stakeholders, and out the other side as working product.
Product Leadership. Technical Execution. Delivery Support.
We provide the people across all three pillars. Most engagements draw from two or three. A few pull from all of them.
Strategy that fits your reality, not a template.
Senior product managers, owners, and strategists who step into ambiguous environments, clarify what is actually being asked for, manage stakeholders across functions, and shape a backlog that ties the work back to the business outcome.
- Who you bring in
- Product managers, product owners, product strategists, discovery leads.
- When you bring them in
- When the initiative is funded but the scope is fuzzy, when stakeholders disagree about success, or when a build is in flight and losing direction.
Development you can see every week.
Senior engineers, technical leads, architects, and designers who integrate with your team, contribute every sprint, and produce working software you can review on a regular cadence. No black boxes.
- Who you bring in
- Tech leads, full-stack, front-end, back-end, designers, architects, QA, DevOps.
- When you bring them in
- When your team is at capacity, when senior talent cannot be hired in time, or when an existing build needs experienced hands to get it across the line.
Enterprise delivery handled with you, not around you.
Scrum masters, delivery leads, project managers, and process specialists who keep teams organized, surface dependencies before they block, and navigate procurement, security, and multi-team coordination.
- Who you bring in
- Scrum masters, delivery leads, technical program managers, agile coaches.
- When you bring them in
- When the build is moving but the wheels are coming off, when multiple teams must coordinate to ship one product, or when enterprise process is consuming more time than the work itself.
How we plug in.
Different initiatives need different shapes of help. Pick the model that matches where your team is stretched, and we will assemble the right people behind it.
Individual Specialists
- Who it is for
- Teams that have most of what they need but are missing a specific role — a PM, senior engineer, scrum master, or designer.
- What is included
- A single experienced contributor embedded directly into your team, working inside your cadence and tooling.
- How it engages
- Day-one integration into your existing structure. Reports through your management. Contributes the way an internal hire would, without the hiring lift.
- Typical timeline
- 3–12 months
Embedded Delivery Pod
- Who it is for
- Teams that need a cross-functional unit to own a defined slice of work end-to-end inside a larger product.
- What is included
- A small pod, typically a product lead plus engineers and a designer, scoped to the work you are trying to move forward.
- How it engages
- Operates as a self-contained unit inside your broader team. Takes a meaningful slice of the roadmap and delivers it.
- Typical timeline
- 6–18 months
Discovery-to-Build Team
- Who it is for
- Companies that have an initiative but not a clear definition of what to build, and need a partner from day one.
- What is included
- A full team that takes you from rough idea through discovery, requirements, design, and into shipped software. Product, design, engineering, and delivery in one engagement.
- How it engages
- Discovery phase first, then a defined build phase, with the same team carrying context the whole way.
- Typical timeline
- Varies by scope.
Post-Launch Support
- Who it is for
- Products already in market that need experienced hands to maintain, iterate, stabilize, or extend.
- What is included
- A team configured for ongoing work: bug fixes, feature additions, performance work, support engineering — whatever the product needs to keep growing.
- How it engages
- Continuous engagement with predictable cadence. Right-sized to the actual demands of the live product.
- Typical timeline
- Ongoing.
From the first call to a shipped product.
Every engagement is different. The shape below is the one most of ours follow.
Stage 1 — Discovery
We start by understanding what you are trying to move forward, what your team already owns, where the gaps are, and what enterprise realities the work has to survive. This is a real diagnostic, not a sales call.
Stage 2 — Team Assembly
Based on discovery, we propose the team shape: engagement model, specific roles, and how they integrate with your existing structure. You see the people. You approve the team.
Stage 3 — Embedded Delivery
The team integrates into your cadence. Stand-ups, sprints, reviews — inside your process, not ours. We contribute every week. You see the work every week.
Stage 4 — Handoff or Post-Launch
When the initiative ships, we either hand off cleanly to your internal team with full documentation and context, or we continue as your post-launch support team. Your call.
The people we plug in.
Organized by pillar. Mix and match across engagement models.
